Ölüdeniz Efsanesi / The Legend of Ölüdeniz

Ölüdeniz Efsanesi

    Ölüdeniz ismi verilen koya denizden dar bir boğaz ile girilmektedir. Boğazın iki yanındaki sarp yamaçlar ise çam ağaçlarıyla kaplıdır. Bu nedenle görülmesi oldukça zordur.
    Açık denizden doksan derecelik bir dönemeçle ak bir kumsala varılır, daha sonra da döne döne bir göl görünümündeki koya girilir. Yörede bu şaşılası yere dair şu Ölüdeniz Efsanesi anlatılır;

    Balıkçılıkla geçinen bir baba-oğul günün birinde bu sarp kayalar karşısında fırtınaya tutulur. Oğul, kayalıklara yaklaşırsa, bir koya sığınabileceklerini söyler ve karaya yaklaşmaya başlar.
    Babaysa kayalıklara çarpmaktan korkmakta, burada koy olamayacağını yineleyip durmaktadır. Aralarında tartışma çıkar. Baba, tam kayaya çarpacaklarını sandığı an, bir kürek vuruşuyla oğlunu denize yuvarlar.
    Dümene geçtiğinde bir de bakar ki deniz dönerek dümdüz bir koya açılmakta. Koya girer ama yıkılmıştır. Oğlunun acısıyla o da canına kıyar.
    Söylenenlere göre Ölüdeniz'in çevresinde insan yüzünü andıran bir kaya vardır. Bu kaya, oğlanın taşlaşmış başıdır.
    Fırtınalı havalarda "buraya gelin" diyerek denizcilere yol gösterir.

The Legend of Ölüdeniz

    The lagoon called Ölüdeniz is entered from the open sea by a narrow strait. The steep slopes on both sides of the strait are covered with pine trees and therefore cannot be noticed easliy. A ninety-degree bend gives access to the white sands from the open sea and then further bends are taken to reach the lagoon. The following legend accompanies this bewildering location:

    A father and a son, both fisherman, are caught in a storm near these steel rocks. The son claims that if they come near these rocks, they can take refuge in a bay and starts approaching the land. On the other hand, the father is concerned that they would hit the rocks and insists that there could be no bay here.
    They start arguing. Just as they are about the crash, the father hits the son with the oar who falls into the sea.
    He takes the wheel and suddenly notes that the sea is opening into a perfectly smooth bay. The ship is saved but he is heartbroken. Overwhelmed by the death of his son, he kills himself.
    According to the legend, there is a rock at the entrance of Ölüdeniz lagoon which resembles the face of a man. This the son's head turned into stone. During stormy days, he beckons sailors to the safety of the lagoon.
